Open Prisons and Life Sentence

Prisons Forum- Karnataka and the Alternative Law Forum invite you to a talk by Smita Chakraburtty on “Open Prisons and Life Sentence” 
 
BACKGROUND
 
Smita Chakraburtty is a criminal justice practitioner deeply invested in making open prisons the norm and closed prisons the rare exception. In this talk, she will talk about the praxis and politics of open prisons in India, the challenges behind setting up and administering open prisons in Rajasthan. She will speak to us about why she believes the open prison system is a successful and sustainable alternative to the existing closed prison system. She will also discuss the relationship between life sentences and open prisons, and question the utility and/or legality of life sentences from an anti-carceral perspective.
 
SPEAKER
 
Smita Chakraburtty has been working on prisons for more than a decade. She is the founder of PAAR- Prisons Aid + Action Research. She has inspected prisons across the country. Her experiences, particularly in Rajasthan, shaped the founding of PAAR in 2018.
