COME, LET’S NOT JUST “ADJUST”, LET’S DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!
LET’S TELL BMTC HOW TO DECIDE WHAT THE BUS FARE SHOULD BE; LET’S ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS; LET’S WAGE A RELENTLESS STRUGGLE!

25TH MAY, SUNDAY- 10:30AM, PEACEFUL RALLY FROM SHANTINAGAR BUS STAND TO THE TRANSPORT MINISTER’S HOUSE

Dear people of Bangalore, this is injustice!
In Bangalore, a family needs a minimum of Rs. 20,000 a month to live a dignified life. But in this city more than 50% of the people earn only Rs. 4000-5000 a month, which is the minimum wage fixed by the government. Many people earn more than this, and many much less than this amount. Now, a bus pass cannot be bought even at Rs. 1000(20% of the minimum wage), since the government has raised it to more than this amount.

The bus fares in Karnataka are the highest in the country! It’s not only the BMTC, but the government is also responsible for this.
In Chennai the minimum bus fare is Rs. 3, in Bangalore it is Rs. 6. This is possible in Chennai as the salaries of the transport corporation workers are paid by the state government. Why can’t our state government do this? It is said that BMTC suffered a loss of Rs.140 crore last year, but the BMTC paid Rs.185 crore on diesel and vehicle taxes alone. Why can’t the government waive these taxes? Won’t there be further savings if the BMTC becomes more efficient and its leakages are plugged? This time the state government in its budget has not sanctioned even one rupee for BMTC. Why?

Doesn’t the state government have funds for BMTC?
If it’s true that the state government doesn’t have funds, why has it given concessions worth hundreds of crores to Toyota and Volvo companies? Similarly, some governments have given subsidies/tax rebates to Ford and Nano car-makers. Indeed, the government is incurring an expenditure of Rs.80,000 on every Ford car, and Rs.69,000 on Nano cars. The concessions given to the developers of SEZs around Bangalore amount to more than Rs. 5000 crores. Concessions for the rich/capitalists, the burden of bus fare increase for the common people!
Is the bus fare increase due to increase in employees’ salaries and related expenditure?
No, certainly not. In fact, the BMTC has not provided several benefits due to its employees. The employees are facing several problems, including non-payment of this year’s DA. The BMTC must be more efficient as well as plug its leakages. Most important of all, the government must not consider the BMTC as a profit making institution.

IT’S TIME FOR US TO FIX A JUST BUS FARE! 50 PAISE PER KILOMETRE!
Rs. 5 for 10 kms! Rs.10 for 11-20 kms! Rs.15 for more than 20 kms!
Rs.25 for the daily pass! Rs. 250 for the monthly pass!
Free bus pass for workers earning less than the minimum wage!

How did we decide this fare?
Worldwide people spend 5% of their income on transport. In Karnataka, the lowest stipulated minimum wage is Rs.5000 per month. Rs. 250(proposed bus fare) is 5% of the monthly wage.

Yes, certainly, it is possible! How?
This government has provided Rs.10,000 crore as subsidy to the Bangalore Metro. However, the BMTC carries four times the number of passengers carried by the Metro. Hence, the BMTC should be provided at least Rs.1000 crore as subsidy. In fact, the bus fares can come down if the government refunds the taxes paid to it by the BMTC. Or, the government here can pay salaries to the BMTC workers, as in Chennai. If the government is serious about its concern for the common people, workers and the poor, it should immediately lower the bus fare.
