Description of Film
Chuvatukal (2014), Short Documentary film, Small Steps (English Translation), 15 minutes, Language Malayalam (w/ English Subtitles), Film by Sonia Joseph.
Over the past few years, the Indian queer movement has gained greater visibility and public legibility via the widespread attention given to the historic legal judgments for IPC-377 and Transgender representation. In Bangalore City, over the years there has been an increased availability and access to TransHealth services such as hormone administration and sex reassignment surgery (SRS). While such systematic availability of critical medical services is great news, the costs related to these facilities remain prohibitively high for working-class people. Chuvatukal helps to understand the complicated ways in which class, caste, gender and sexuality inform each other through the stories of three Dalit, transgender men – Tintu, Eby and Appu.
The film screening and discussion event is part of a fund-raising effort for Transhealth-related costs for Tintu, Eby and Appu for whom the economics related to these services remain a significant burden.
The film is not available for public distribution.
