As part of the citizens’ initiative a team, consisting of members from Citizens Imitative and Chennai has been in Nagapattinam and Karaikal from the 29th of December onwards. The basic team, comprising about 4-5 people from Bangalore and Chennai, played the role of identifying the needs in various villages besides liaising with local groups. Many other volunteers from Bangalore and Chennai have been extending crucial support in terms of volunteering and raising resources.

A month after the tsunami, and most of the relief camps has been closed. The Government relief has been officially stopped and its talk is of rehabilitation. The relief that poured in immediately after the tragedy has all but dried up. Yet on 24th January 2005, the villagers of Keelavanchor blocked the road between Nagapattinam and Karaikal to highlight the need for continued relief until livelihoods are restored.
